MXL5: Extension Overrides Default Directory Setting

ID: Q122507

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Apple Macintosh System Software, versions 7.5, 8.0

SYMPTOMS

If you run the General Controls extension that ships with System 7.5, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • You will not be able to set the Default Directory Location for Microsoft Excel 5.0 by changing the value on the General tab of the Options dialog box.

  • The extension will cause incorrect execution of the following statements: ChDir
DIRECTORY() in Microsoft Excel 4.0 Macro code

  • Code that uses the following line may not be run as expected: Application.dialogs(xldialogopen).show

  • You will not be able to double-click a file and have Microsoft Excel start up with that file's directory as Excel's default directory.

In all cases, when the Open dialog box is invoked, the dialog box will default to the incorrect directory.

CAUSE

In Macintosh System 7.5, the General Controls extension has a new setting that allows you to set the default folder that is used when you open or save files. This setting overrides any default directory setting established in Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for the Macintosh.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this conflict, remove the General Controls extension from the "System Folder:Control Panels" folder or disable the extension in the Extensions Manager (you can access Extensions Manager from the Control Panel).

Macintosh System 7.5 is a product manufactured by Apple Computer, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this products' performance or reliability.
