SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, you may encounter problems if you use a defined name that refers to a relative reference on a closed workbook. Formulas using such defined names may not be copied, pasted, or filled as expected.

To use formulas that contain defined names that refer to relative references on a source workbook, open the source workbook while you are working with the dependent workbook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Microsoft Excel version 5.0. The problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0, Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, and Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
