XL: Unsaved Filename Shows in Title Bar After "Disk is Full" Error

ID: Q129161

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

If you receive the "Disk is Full" error message while you are saving a file in Microsoft Excel, although the file is not saved, the title bar of the file shows the unsaved file name.

For example, if you save the file "Book1" with the name "Test.xls" and you receive the "Disk is Full" error message while you are saving the file, the file is not saved, but the title bar now reads Test.xls.

CAUSE

This is by design in Microsoft Excel. This occurs because Microsoft Excel changes the window name before it finishes saving the file. If the file is not completely saved because of a "Disk is Full" error message, the window name is not changed back to its original name.

MORE INFORMATION

After the "Disk is Full" error message, you will receive either of the messages below.

Microsoft Excel 5.0 and later:
Document not saved.
Microsoft Excel 4.0:
Document not saved. Any previously saved copy has been deleted.
