XL5: Can't Run 5.0 for NT and Win95 Program on Same Computer

ID: Q131299

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95, version 4.1

SYMPTOMS

It is not possible to run Microsoft Excel for Windows NT version 5.0 and the Windows 95 applications listed above on the same computer. If Microsoft Excel for NT is detected during the Setup of Microsoft Excel 7.0, the following prompt is displayed:

Setup has detected Microsoft Excel for Windows NT on your hard disk.

After the installation of Microsoft Excel 7.0, this version will not work anymore. Would you like to have this version removed?
At this prompt, if you choose Yes, the existing version of Microsoft Excel for Windows NT will be removed. If you choose No, the NT version will not be removed, and Setup will continue. Note, however, that you will not be able to start the NT version of Microsoft Excel.

When you run Microsoft Excel for Windows NT after installing one of the Microsoft Windows 95 applications listed above, you receive the following message:
An error occurred initializing the VBA libraries (-25346)

CAUSE

Due to internal differences in the 32-bit Visual Basic for Applications library files needed to run the Windows 95 applications, it is not possible for Microsoft Excel for Windows NT and the Microsoft Windows 95 applications listed above to reside on the same computer.

Note that although Microsoft PowerPoint version 7.0 does not use the Microsoft Visual Basic Programming System, Applications Edition, PowerPoint does use the Visual Basic for Applications library files.
