XL: Using Wildcard in Workbook Names with Data Consolidation

ID: Q133332

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SUMMARY

The Data Consolidation feature may fail to consolidate all data sources if you use wildcard characters to select multiple closed workbooks unless the data to be consolidated is on the first sheet in each workbook. You do not receive an error message if the data is not consolidated from all sources.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design of the Microsoft Excel application. As in previous releases of Microsoft Excel, the Consolidate method only works on the first sheet in a workbook unless the workbook is open.

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Ensure that all workbooks are open when the Consolidate command
is used.
Method 2: Ensure that all references involved in the data consolidation are
on the first sheet in each workbook.
