XL7:Auto Calculation For Summing Using 24-Hour Clock

ID: Q135511

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the AutoCalculate feature to view the sum of a list of time values, you may see that the sum of the times is shown on a 24-hour clock instead of being shown as a total sum of the times. For example, when you sum three values of 9:00:00 AM, AutoCalculate may show 3:00:00 instead of 27:00:00.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the first cell you have selected is formatted to show the 24-hour-clock time format.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, format the cells that contain the times with the Time format greater that 24 hours. To format the cells to be greater that 24 hours, use the following steps:

  1. Select the group of cells you want to format

  2. On the Format menu, click Cells.

  3. Select the Time category on the Number tab.

  4. Click 26:30:55.

MORE INFORMATION

The results of the AutoCalculate feature appear on the status bar; AutoCalculate provides you with real-time information concerning the sum, average, count, count nums, min, or max of the currently selected cells.
