MSQUERY: Error Entering Criteria with Add Criteria Dialog

ID: Q139419

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Query for Windows, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Query, you may receive an error message similar to the following when you add criteria in the Add Criteria dialog box:

Syntax Error

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use various third-party Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) drivers. The following ODBC drivers are known to display this behavior:

DEC Rdb, versions 1.x and 2.0
IBM DB2

RESOLUTION

You can use an alternate method of entering criteria to avoid this problem. This method requires you to specify the criteria information directly in the Criteria Pane. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. If the Criteria Pane is not visible, choose Criteria from the View menu.

  2. Select a cell in the Criteria Field row, type the name of the field to which you want to apply criteria, and press ENTER.

NOTE: You can also specify criteria by clicking a Criteria Field cell, clicking the down arrow in the cell, and selecting the field in the list. You can also drag a field name from the appropriate table in the Table pane.

The DEC/Oracle ODBC driver for Rdb, version 2.0-A, corrects this problem. This driver is available from your Oracle Sales Representative.
