  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you use the drop shadow feature in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above, if you remove an existing drop shadow, a rectangle may remain around the range or object that had the drop shadow.

WORKAROUND

To remove the rectangle:

  1. Click the rectangle to select it.

  2. Press the DELETE key. (Press the DEL key if you are using a Macintosh.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was fixed in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows and Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

The Drop Shadow button is located on the Drawing toolbar. This button adds a dark border to the right side and bottom of the selected range or object.

NOTE: The Drop Shadow Button help topic in Microsoft Excel 5.0 incorrectly states "To remove the drop shadow, select the range or object and then click the Drop Shadow button again." To remove the drop shadow, use the workaround shown above.
