XL7: Cannot Start Help by Pressing F1 on Module Sheet

ID: Q147183

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0, when you are on a module sheet and you press F1 for Help, you may receive an error message stating that the Help file cannot be located. This error message may indicate the incorrect Help file for the version of Microsoft Excel you are using.

CAUSE

The error occurs because Microsoft Excel looks at the country setting on the Regional Settings tab in Control Panel to determine which language version of the Help file to display. If the country setting in the Regional Settings in Control Panel does not match your Microsoft Excel version, you may experience this problem.

For example, if you are running the United States version of Microsoft Excel, version 7.0, and the country setting on the Regional Settings tab in Control Panel is set to a country other than the United States, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Cannot find the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VBA\\VBAxx.HLP file. Do you want to try to find this file yourself?

You then receive an error message similar to the following:

Cannot find the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VBA\\VBAxx.HLP Help file. Check to see that the file exists on your disk. If it doesn't, you need to reinstall it.

RESOLUTION

To successfully display the Visual Basic for Applications Help file, do one of the following:

  • Change the country setting (on the Regional Settings tab on the Regional Settings Properties dialog box) in Control Panel so that it matches the Microsoft Excel version you are using. This will allow you to display the Help file by pressing F1 on the module sheet.

For more information about how to change the Country setting in Windows, see your Windows printed documentation or online Help.
