XL7: Illegal Instruction Error Trying to Insert Unattached Text

SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Excel, if you have a column chart and you try to insert
unattached text in the chart, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
At this point, your only option is to click Close.
CAUSE
You may experience this problem if both of the following conditions are
true:
- You create the column chart using the ChartWizard, and in step 3 of 5
in the wizard, you click column chart type 2.
-and-
- You then try to insert unattached text by pressing a numeric key on your
keyboard without first clicking the formula bar.
NOTE: Normally, to insert unattached text, you do not have to click the
formula bar first.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do the following:
- Activate the chart if it is not activated.
- Click the formula bar.
- Type the numeric value or values you want to insert as unattached text,
and then press ENTER.
You should see the value or values you entered in step 3 appear in the
center of your chart as unattached text.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel for Windows
95, version 7.0. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows
95, version 7.0a.
