XL7: Defined Names Deleted After Opening Dependent Workbook

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you delete a worksheet containing a defined name that is shared with another workbook, all the defined names in the source workbook may be deleted after the dependent workbook tries to update the links.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when a dependent document has links to non-existent sheets in a source file and the dependent document also contains chart objects.


WORKAROUND

To work around this around this problem, do the following:

  • Break the links between the dependent document and the source document before you delete the sheet containing the defined name.


  • Avoid deleting a sheet containing a defined name that is linked to a chart object.


  • Avoid including charts in the dependent workbook.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
