XL5: Segment Load Failure Starting Excel from MOM

ID: Q149037

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office Standard for Windows, version 4.2
  • Microsoft Office Professional for Windows, version 4.3
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c

SYMPTOM

When you start Microsoft Excel from Microsoft Office Manager (MOM), you may receive the following error message when Microsoft Excel is starting:
EXCEL has caused a Segment Load Failure in module EXCEL.EXE at <memory offset>
Note that Microsoft Excel loads and runs correctly if you start it by clicking the Microsoft Excel icon in Program Manager.

CAUSE

This error may occur for either of the following reasons:

  • Microsoft Excel is trying to load the Excel.exe file on startup. This occurs because MOM allows you to enter startup parameters for a program, and the path to Excel.exe may have been entered in this section.

  • The Msoffice.ini file contains incorrect information.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the method appropriate to your situation.

Method 1: Remove the pointer to the Microsoft Excel executable from the
          startup parameters box:

          a. Click the Microsoft Office button on the MOM toolbar.

          b. Click Customize.

          c. Click the Toolbar tab.

NOTE: The Menu tab also allows the same modifications.

          d. Select Microsoft Excel in the list.

          e. Click the Edit button.

          f. Remove any reference to Excel.exe from the Parameters section.

          g. Click OK to close the customize dialog boxes and save your
             changes.

Method 2: Rename Msoffice.ini in the Windows directory and restart MOM.
Note that this workaround will remove all previous MOM
          customization.

Method 3: Edit Msoffice.ini using a text editor such as Notepad. In the
[ToolbarOrder] section of MSoffice.ini, edit the "MSApp2=" line
such that it resembles the following:

             MSApp2=2,1,
