XL98: Computer Beeps Repeatedly When You Use Print Preview

ID: Q176638

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you use the scroll bar to scroll from one page to another in print preview, the computer may beep repeatedly for a period of time that is between 5 seconds to 10 minutes.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you click the up or down scroll arrow and hold down the mouse button longer than is necessary to scroll through the document. For example, if you click the scroll arrow to scroll down to the last page that is displayed in print preview and you continue to hold down the mouse button, the computer begins to beep when the last page is displayed.

The longer you hold down the mouse button, the longer the computer beeps.

NOTE: This problem does not occur if you move from one page to another page one page at a time.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, click the scroll arrow and do not hold down the mouse button.

If this problem occurs, wait until the computer eventually stops beeping.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0, or in Microsoft Excel for Windows. In these versions of Microsoft Excel, the computer stops beeping immediately after you release the mouse button.
