XL98: Type 1 or Type 2 Error When You Click a Comment

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you insert a comment into a cell in a worksheet, and then click the comment, you may receive one of the following error messages:

The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred.

You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.
-or-
The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 2 occurred.

You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.
Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition quits without allowing you to save your work.


CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • In the View tab of the Preferences dialog box (on the Tools menu, click Preferences, and then click the View tab), the Comment Indicator Only and Hide All options are both selected.


  • -and-

  • You insert a comment into a cell by clicking Comment on the Insert menu.


  • -and-

  • You display the comment by moving the cursor over the cell. You then quickly move the cursor over the comment and click the comment before it disappears from the screen.



RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do not click a comment when the Hide All option is selected in the View tab of the Preferences dialog box.

If you select the Show All or Show Placeholders option, the problem does not occur when you click a comment. To select either option, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences. Click the View tab.


  2. Click to select either the Show All or the Show Placeholders option.


  3. Click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
