XL98: Error Saving Personal Macro Workbook

ID: Q178518

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYPMTOMS

When you quit Microsoft Excel and try to save the Personal Macro Workbook, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'Microsoft Office 98:Microsoft
Office 98:Office:Startup:Excel'. There are several possible reasons:

  • The file name or path name does not exist.

  • The file you're trying to open is being used by another program. Close the document in the other program, and try again.

  • The name of the workbook you're trying to save is the same as the name of another document that is read-only. Try saving the workbook with a different name.

When you click OK, you receive the following error message:
You cannot save the Personal Macro Workbook in the startup folder.
Save it elsewhere now and move it to the starup folder later.

CAUSE

This problem will occur when you do the following:

  • You run Excel directly from the CD or from a share point on a server.

  • -and-

  • You create or record a macro in the Personal Macro Workbook and try to save the workbook.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use an alternate startup folder either on your local hard disk or a disk in which you have full (read, write, and change) permissions. Follow these steps to set the "Alternate startup file location" folder:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences.

  2. Click the General tab.

  3. Type the driver name and path in the "Alternate startup file location" box. For example, if you want to set this to your Data folder and your drive is named Macintosh HD you would type the following:
    Macintosh HD:Data

STATUS

This is by design in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
