SYMPTOMS
If you copy a chart in Microsoft Excel and then attempt to paste the chart
into a document in Microsoft Word, either of the following problems may
occur:
- You cannot paste the chart. The Paste menu items on the Edit menu and
on the shortcut menu are not available.
-or-
- If you are running Microsoft Excel in Microsoft Windows 95/98, you
may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive the following error message:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at
<address>.
Where address is 0137:30040e8e or 0137:3003a6df in Windows 95.
CAUSE
These problems may occur if the following conditions are true:
- In Microsoft Excel, you create a chart and then copy the chart to the
Clipboard.
-and-
- You either quit Microsoft Excel without saving the workbook that
contains the chart, or you close the workbook without saving it. As a
result, the chart is not saved with the workbook.
-and-
- You then attempt to paste the chart into a document in Microsoft Word.
Note that this problem does not occur when you use earlier versions of
Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
WORKAROUND
To work around these problems, do not close the workbook in Microsoft
Excel or quit Microsoft Excel until after you have pasted the chart in
Microsoft Word. After you paste the chart, you can safely close the
workbook or quit Microsoft Excel.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
