XL98: Extended Characters Are Sorted Incorrectly When You Use Pick From List

SYMPTOMS

When you use Pick From List in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, the order in which the data is sorted in the Pick From List box may be different from the sorted data on the worksheet.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You are using ASCII characters on a worksheet.


  • -and-

  • You sort the data in the worksheet.


  • -and-

  • You view the sort order of the Pick From List.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Holding down the CONTROL key and clicking a cell beside a range of values displays a shortcut menu with a Pick From List command. This list allows you to easily choose a possible AutoComplete value by clicking it in the list. These values are sorted in ascending order.

Example

Assume the following data is on a worksheet:
A1: David
A2: Sam
A3: John
With cell A4 selected, hold down the CONTROL key and click cell A4. A shortcut menu appears. Click Pick From List. A list with possible AutoComplete values appears. Notice that the values are sorted in ascending order. When you click on a name in the list box, it is placed in cell A4.
