XL98: "Not Enough Memory" Saving Workbook in 5.0/95 Format

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, when you save a workbook, you may receive the following error message:

Not enough memory.
When you click OK, the workbook is saved. However, when you reopen the workbook, pictures may be missing from the workbook.


CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • You insert a picture that is saved in the JPEG or JPG format by following these steps:

    1. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.


    2. Select the picture file that you want to use.


    3. Click Insert.

  • You then save the workbook in the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook format.



WORKAROUND

You may be able to work around this problem by converting the JPEG or JPG picture into a bitmap. To do this, repeat the following steps for each picture in the workbook:

  1. Select the picture.


  2. Hold down the SHIFT key. On the Edit menu, click Copy Picture. Click As Shown On Screen and click OK.


  3. Delete the picture by pressing the DELETE key.


  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
