XL98: Workbook Takes an Unusually Long Time to Open

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Excel 98 workbook, the process takes an unusually long time.


CAUSE

This behavior may occur when you use wrapped text for a large number of cells. It is most noticeable when you use wrapped text for 1,000 or more rows.


WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, limit the number of cells that use wrapped text. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the cells that use wrapped text.


  2. On the Format menu, click Cells.


  3. Click the Alignment tab. Under Text control, clear the Wrap Text check box. Click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Example

To see an example of this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Excel 98 and create a new workbook.


  2. Select A1:AA1000. Type Testing Wrapped Text in Excel 98. Press CONTROL+RETURN.


  3. On the File menu, click Save As. Type Test in the Save As box, and click Save.


  4. On the File menu, click Close.


  5. On the File menu, click Open. Click Test and click OK. Note the amount of time that it takes to open the file.


  6. Select A1:AA1000. On the Format menu, click Cells. Click the Alignment tab. Click Wrap Text under Text control and then click OK.


  7. On the File menu, click Save. On the File menu, click Close.


  8. On the File menu, click Open. Select Test and click OK. Note the amount of time that it takes to open the file.


It takes longer to open the workbook the second time.
