SYMPTOMS

If you select text in a text box in Microsoft PowerPoint and attempt to drag the text to a cell in a Microsoft Excel, the text may not appear in the cell.

NOTE: If you click Move From on the shortcut menu to move the text from Microsoft PowerPoint to Microsoft Excel, the text is removed from Microsoft PowerPoint and does not appear in the cell in Microsoft Excel.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You use the mouse to drag text in a text box on a slide in Microsoft PowerPoint to a cell in Microsoft Excel.

  • -and-

  • You hold down COMMAND+OPTION before you hold down the mouse button to move the data.

  • -and-

  • You release the mouse button in the cell before you release COMMAND+OPTION so that the shortcut menu appears.

  • -and-

  • You select any item on the shortcut menu except Create Hyperlink Here.

NOTE: If the Microsoft PowerPoint document is not saved, no hyperlink is created.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem and copy the text, drag it from Microsoft PowerPoint to Microsoft Excel without holding down any keys. You do not need to use the shortcut menu.

If you want to recover the text in Microsoft PowerPoint after you click Move From on the shortcut menu, switch to Microsoft PowerPoint and click Undo Drag And Drop on the Edit menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

When you press COMMAND+OPTION when you perform a drag-and-drop operation, a shortcut menu appears. You can select the action you want to perform from the shortcut menu. However, when you drag text from a text box in a Microsoft PowerPoint slide to a cell in Microsoft Excel, the only command that functions is the Create Hyperlink Here command.
