XL98: Upgrade Does Not Migrate Excel Startup Files
ID: Q183502

The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade an earlier version of Microsoft Excel to Microsoft Excel
98 Macintosh Edition and run a macro from your Personal Macro Workbook, the
following error message appears:
'Personal Macro Workbook' could not be found. Check the Spelling of the
file name, and verify that the file location is correct.
If you are trying to open the file from your list of most
recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the
file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.
CAUSE
Excel 98 creates a new folder for startup files in a new location and does
not move existing files from an earlier version into that new folder.
WORKAROUND
To resolve this problem, copy the Personal Macro Workbook file from the
Excel Startup Folder or Excel Startup Folder (5), which is in the
Preferences folder of System Folder on your computer, to the following new
folder:
Microsoft Office 98:Office:Startup:Excel
To use the Personal Macro Workbook file that you used with the earlier
version of Excel in Excel 98, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Use the Macintosh Finder
To use this method, follow these steps:
- In the Macintosh Finder, open the Excel Startup Folder or Excel Startup
Folder (5) in the Preferences folder of System Folder, click the
Personal Macro Workbook file, and then click Duplicate on the File
menu.
- Open the Excel folder in the StartUp folder for Excel 98 and drag the
copy of the Personal Macro Workbook file you created in step 1 into the
Excel folder. Select and delete the word "copy" and the leading space
from the title of the file.
By default, the new Excel Startup folder is located in the following
folder
<Hard disk>:Microsoft Office 98:Office:Startup:Excel
unless you changed the destination folder for Excel 98 when you
installed it.
Method 2: Use Excel 98
To use this method, follow these steps:
- In Excel 98, open the Personal Macro Workbook file from its old
location:
<Hard disk>:System Folder:Preferences:Excel Startup Folder (5).
NOTE: The file is hidden when you open it. To unhide the file, click
Unhide on the Window menu.
- Click Save As on the File menu. Open the new Excel Startup folder.
By default, this folder is located in the following folder
<Hard disk>:Microsoft Office 98:Office:Startup:Excel
unless you changed the destination folder for Excel 98 when you
installed it.
- After you save the file, hide the workbook by clicking Hide on the
Window menu. Quit Excel. When you are prompted to save changes in the
Personal Macro Workbook, click Yes.
MORE INFORMATION
When you upgrade to Excel 98, the Personal Macro Workbook is not moved to
the new Startup folder for Excel 98. When you start Excel 98, the Unhide
command on the Window menu is dimmed, which indicates that no hidden
Personal Macro Workbook exists. If you have any macro or toolbar buttons
that run macros that are stored in the Personal Macro Workbook, the error
message in the "Symptoms" section in this article appears.
