XL98: Unable to Delete or Hide Sheet1

ID: Q184500

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98, when you open a workbook that you have created in Microsoft Excel version 5.0, the following behavior may occur:

  • A worksheet that is named Sheet1 is inserted into the workbook.

  • -and-

  • You cannot delete or hide Sheet1 unless you first insert another visible sheet.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the workbook that you have created in Microsoft Excel version 5.0 contains only module sheets.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, insert a visible sheet in the workbook.

You cannot initially delete or hide the worksheet that is inserted into the workbook when you open the workbook in Microsoft Excel 98. One or more visible sheets must exist in a workbook. In Microsoft Excel 98, you cannot unhide module sheets that you have inserted in workbook that you have created in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel. If you insert another visible sheet, you can delete or hide Sheet1.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 98.

MORE INFORMATION

If you encounter this behavior and you try to delete the inserted Sheet1, you receive the following error message:

A workbook must contain at least one visible worksheet.

To hide, delete, or move the selected sheet(s), you must first insert a new sheet or unhide a sheet that is already hidden.
In Microsoft Excel 98, you cannot insert new module sheets or unhide module sheets that you have inserted into a workbook that you have created in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel. Therefore, you must retain the extra worksheet. If you insert another visible sheet into the workbook (such as a chart sheet or a Microsoft Excel 5.0 dialog sheet), you can then delete or hide the worksheet that Microsoft Excel has inserted.
