XL98: Error Message Opening Non-English File with Module Sheet

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a file in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Error in loading DLL
-or-
Translation failed. Please check the Trnslate.log file for more information.


CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You attempt to open a file that was created in a non-English version of Microsoft Excel.


  • -and-

  • The file contains a Visual Basic for Applications module sheet.



WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: If You Receive the "Error in loading DLL" Error Message

If you received the first error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, follow these steps:
  1. Save your work and quit Excel if it is running.


  2. Insert the Microsoft Office 98 compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive.


  3. Open the Value Pack folder on the Office 98 CD.


  4. Double-click the Value Pack Installer.


  5. Click the triangle next to Programmability.


  6. Click the triangle next to Excel Type Libraries.


  7. Click the appropriate type library. If you do not know the origin of the file, click to select Excel Type Libraries.


  8. Click Install.


  9. Click Quit.


  10. Open the System Folder:Preferences folder on your hard disk.


  11. Drag the Excel Settings (8) file to the Trash.


  12. Start Excel.


  13. Open the file for which the error message appeared.


When you open the file, you receive the following message:
The project has been translated into English.

Method 2: If You Receive the "Translation failed" Error Message

If you received the second error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, follow these steps:
  1. Save your work and quit Excel if it is running.


  2. Open the System Folder:Preferences folder on your hard disk.


  3. Drag the Excel Settings (8) file to the Trash.


  4. Start Excel.


  5. Open the file for which the error message appeared.


When you open the file, you receive the following message:
The project has been translated into English.
