OFF98: Apple Color Pickers Are Not Used When You Choose Colors

ID: Q184803

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft FrontPage for the Power Macintosh, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

In the programs listed at the beginning of this article, when you choose a color for an AutoShape, a cell, or any other object that can be colored, none of the Apple color pickers are available. For an example of this behavior, please see the "More Information" section in this article.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Microsoft Office 98 programs use their own "color pickers."

STATUS

This behavior is by design in the programs listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Example

To use this example, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Excel 98.

  2. If the Drawing toolbar is not displayed, click the Drawing tool on the Standard toolbar.

  3. Click the Oval tool on the drawing toolbar, and then drag an oval onto the worksheet.

  4. On the Format menu, click AutoShape. Click the Colors And Lines tab.

When you click the Colors And Lines tab, no option to use any of the Apple color pickers is available.

The Macintosh Operating System (OS) allows you to choose different colors by using several different color pickers. You can find these pickers under Mac OS 8.0 by pointing to Control Panels on the Apple menu, and clicking Appearance. Under System 7.5.x, you can find these pickers by pointing to Control Panels on the Apple menu and clicking Color. Microsoft Office does not use these pickers to select colors. Instead, each Microsoft Office program uses it's own version of a color picker.
