XL98: Selected Items in MS Excel 5.0 Dialog Box Move

SYMPTOMS

When you select an item in a list box, the list box may be scrolled so that the selected item is displayed at the bottom of the visible items in the list.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

You are using a list box on an MS Excel 5.0 dialog sheet.

You specify a cell link for the list box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not specify a cell link for the list box. To remove a cell link from a list box, follow these steps:

Switch to the dialog sheet in your workbook.

Double-click the list box.

Click the Control tab in the Format Control dialog box.

Clear the Cell Link box. Click OK.

When you now run the dialog sheet, the items are not moved in the list box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.

Example of the problem

To see an example of the problem described in this article, follow these steps:

Start Microsoft Excel 98.

Type the following in Sheet1 of a new workbook:
```
      A1: 1
      A2: 2 
```

Select cells A1:A2. Use the fill handle to fill values down to row 20.

Hold down the CONTROL key and click one of the sheet tabs. Click Insert on the shortcut menu that appears. Click MS Excel 5.0 Dialog and click OK.

Draw a list box on the dialog sheet. Double-click the list box.

Click the Control tab. In the Input range box type Sheet1!A1:A20. In the Cell link box type Sheet1!C1. Click OK.

On the Forms toolbar, click Run Dialog.

Scroll down to the end of the list and select any item except for the last item.

The selected item shifts to the bottom of the viewable selection.
