  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you click the arrow for the Font box in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, some of the font names may appear as extended characters and you will not be able to read the names of the font.

-or-

When you select a foreign language font in the Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition Font box, the name of the selected font displays as _____ (a short underline) in the box.

CAUSE

Some of the font names in the Font list may not be readable (in Excel) or display as _____ (in Word) if you have not registered these programs with the Language Register program in the <hard drive name>:Apple Extras folder.

RESOLUTION

To be able to read the names of the foreign language fonts that you have installed on your computer, you need to register Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word with that language. To do this for Excel, follow these steps:

  1. Quit Microsoft Excel.

  2. Open the <hard drive name>:Apple Extras folder.

  3. Double-click the Language Register program.

NOTE: This program may be listed as "<foreign language> Language Register" (without quotation marks).

  4. Click the arrow for the Language box. Select the foreign language for which you want to register Microsoft Excel.

  5. Click Register Application.

NOTE: This button may also be displayed as "Register" (without quotation marks).

  6. Locate and select the icon for Microsoft Excel. By default, it will be in your <hard drive name>:Microsoft Office 98 folder.

  7. Click Register. Click OK to the alert that Microsoft Excel was registered in the language you selected.

  8. Start Microsoft Excel.

The font names of the language for which you registered will appear correctly in the Font box.

NOTE: In order to use the foreign language font in your Excel worksheet, you also need to select the foreign language on the Keyboard menu. The font box may display a foreign language font, but the text in the cell may be in English if the keyboard language is set to U.S.

STATUS

This is by design of the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs listed at the beginning of this article.
