XL98: Type 1 Error Updating or Refreshing Links

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition workbook that contains one or more links, and you click Yes to update the link(s), you may receive the following error:

The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of Type 1 occurred.

You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.


CAUSE

You may receive this error when you update your links if one of the links is to a file whose name begins with a period (.).


RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, change the name of any workbook to which you are linking so that its name does not begin with a period (.).

After changing the workbook name(s), you will have to change the link(s) in your dependent workbook. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the workbook with the link(s).


  2. When prompted to update links, click No.


  3. On the Edit menu, click Links.


  4. In the Links dialog box, select a link that used to point to the workbook that began with a period (.).


  5. Click Change Source.


  6. Locate and select the renamed workbook. Click Change.


  7. Repeat Steps 4 through 6 for each link that was broken because you renamed the source workbook.


  8. Click OK in the Links dialog box.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
