ID: Q188492

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, when using the Template Wizard, you may receive the following error message

<Invalid Reference> is not a valid cell reference.
where <Invalid Reference> represents a range of cells on your worksheet.

When you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Run-time error '13': Type mismatch
When you click END, the Template Wizard quits.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • In the Template Wizard - Step 3 of 5, you type an invalid cell reference into one of the Cell boxes.

  • -and-

  • You click the Down or Up button, hiding the Cell box with the invalid reference, before you click Next.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, type only valid references into the Cell boxes.

MORE INFORMATION

When you type an invalid reference in a Cell box in the "Template Wizard - Step 3 of 5" dialog box, and click Next, you receive the following error message

<Invalid Reference> is not a valid cell reference.
where <Invalid Reference> represents a range of cells on your worksheet.

If the Cell box is visible when you click Next, you are returned to the Template Wizard dialog box to correct the invalid reference. However, if the Cell box is not visible when you click Next (because you have clicked the Up or Down buttons previously), you receive the "Run-time error '13': Type mismatch" error described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
