XL: Clicking on Workbook Behind a Chart May Cause Excel to Crash

SYMPTOMS

If you click on a Microsoft Excel workbook, you may receive an error message similar to one of the following, depending on the version of Excel and the operating system you are using.

Excel 5 on Windows 3.11

Application Error. Excel caused a General Protection Fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 001B:2D36

Excel 7 on Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.


If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module Excel.exe at 0137:5000a21c.

Excel 97 on Windows 98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module Excel.exe at 015f:301258f4.

Excel 97 on Windows NT 4.0

An application error has occurred and an application log is being generated.

Exception: access violation(0xc0000005), Address: 0x30118c96


CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • At least two workbooks are open.

    -and-


  • A chart is on a Chart sheet.

    -and-


  • There is a trend line with an equation inserted on the chart.

    -and-


  • You select and copy the equation.

    -and-


  • You minimize the workbook with the chart sheet and click on a workbook in the background.



WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem, activate the workbook in the background before clicking on it. To do this, click the name of the workbook on the Window menu.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
