XL98: "Unable to Record" Error Attempting to Record a Macro

SYMPTOMS

When you try to record a macro in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you may receive the following error message:

Unable to record.
When you click OK, the macro recorder is not started.


CAUSE

You may receive the error above if the VBA Object Library(1) file is missing from the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on your hard disk.


RESOLUTION

To successfully record a macro in Microsoft Excel, copy the VBA Object Library(1) file from your Office 98 CD-ROM to your hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all Office 98 programs if any are running.


  2. Insert your Microsoft Office 98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.


  3. Open the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on the CD-ROM.


  4. Drag the VBA Object Library(1) file from this folder onto your desktop.


  5. Close all windows.


  6. Open the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on your hard disk.


  7. Drag the VBA Object Library(1) file from your desktop into the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder.



MORE INFORMATION

If the VBA Object Library(1) file is missing from the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on your hard disk, you also will not be able to start the Visual Basic Editor (OPTION+F11).
