XL98: Value (Y) Axis Labels Missing When Workbook is Reopened

SYMPTOMS

When you open a workbook that contains a chart, the Value (Y) axis labels may be missing.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You select the Category axis and enable the "Value (Y) axis crosses at maximum category" option on the Scale tab in the Format Axis dialog box.


  • -and-

  • You add a data table to the chart.


To see an example of this problem, see the "More Information" section later in this article.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the "Value (Y) axis crosses at maximum category" option on the Scale tab of the Format Axis dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click to select the Category axis.


  2. On the Format menu, click Selected Axis.


  3. In the Format Axis dialog box, click the Scale tab, and then click to clear the "Value (Y) axis crosses at maximum category" check box.


  4. Click OK.


Note that the Y axis labels reappear but are displayed on the primary Y axis.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.

Example of the Problem

To see an example of this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Create a new workbook, and enter the following values in Sheet1:
    
        A1: 8-May   B1: 9-May   C1: 10-May
        A2: 45      B2: 67      C2: 34
        A3: 45      B3: 56      C3: 50
        A4: 42      B4: 17      C4: 52
        A5: 90      B5: 56      C5: 39 


  2. Select cells A1:C5, and then click the Chart Wizard button on the Standard toolbar.


  3. On the first screen of the Chart Wizard dialog box, under Chart Type, select Line. Click Next, and then click Next again.


  4. On the Chart Wizard Step 3 of 4 screen, select the following options:

    • On the Axes tab, click Category.


    • On the Data Table tab, click Show Data Table.




  5. Click Finish.

    Note that a new chart is added to the worksheet.


  6. Select the Category axis of the chart.


  7. On the Format menu, click Selected Axis.


  8. In the Format Axis dialog box, click the Scale tab, click to select the "Value (Y) axis crosses at maximum category" option, and then click OK.


  9. Save, close, and then reopen the workbook.

    Note that the Value axis labels are no longer visible.
