XL98: Fields Truncated When File Is Saved in dBASE Format

ID: Q191113

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

If a Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh worksheet contains a table with more than 32 columns and you save the file in a dBASE file format, you may only save the first 32 columns of the database. When you close and reopen the file, the columns after the 32nd column may be missing.

CAUSE

This situation occurs because the dBASE file formats will only support a maximum of 255 fields per record in DBF 4 (dBASE IV), 128 fields per record in DBF 3 (dBASE III), and 32 fields per record in DBF 2 (dBASE II).

STATUS

This is by design of Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
