XL7: Errors Connecting to SQL Server 7.0 Data Source with MSQuery

ID: Q229170

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Query for Windows 95, version 2.0, included with:
    • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
    • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Query 2.0 to access data from a Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 database, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • When you attempt to connect to a SQL Server 7.0 data source, you receive the following error message:
MSQRY32 caused an invalid page fault in module MSQRY32.exe at 0137:00437df4.
  • When you double-click a field in a table's field list in the Table pane, and the table is from a SQL Server 7.0 data source, you receive the following error message:
    "Invalid Object name 'database_name.owner_name.table_name'"
where database_name is the database name, owner_name is the owner name of the database, and table_name is the name of the table (for example 'pubs.dbo.authors').
NOTE: The first symptom does not occur if the Year 2000 Update for Microsoft Office 95 (O95y2k.exe) is installed, but the second symptom does occur.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Query 2.0 is not compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 7.0.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade to Microsoft Query 8.0 or later. Microsoft Query 8.0 is included with Microsoft Office 97 or Microsoft Excel 97.
