MXL5: Clicking Save Does Not Save File Under MacOS 9

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0, used with:
    • Mac OS 9


SYMPTOMS

When you click Save, Save As, or Open on the File menu, your computer beeps and your file is not saved.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You are running version 9.0 of the Macintosh System Software (Mac OS).

    -and-

  • The When opening or saving a document, take me to setting under General Controls in Control Panel is set to one of the following settings:

    • Folder that is set by the application.
    • Last folder used in the application.


WORKAROUND

To work around the problem:

  1. Point to Control Panels on the Apple menu and then click General Controls.

    NOTE: If the Control Panels item on the Apple menu is not available, contact the administrator of your computer.


  2. Click Documents folder under When opening or saving a document, take me to, and then close the General Controls window.


NOTE: You may have to also do the following steps if the problem occurs after doing the steps provided above:
  1. On the File menu, click Find File.


  2. Click Cancel in the Find File dialog box.



STATUS

This problem does not occur in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition running under Mac OS 9.0. It also does not occur if you are using Microsoft Excel 5.0 under Mac OS 8.6 or earlier.


MORE INFORMATION

The Documents folder is created by the Mac OS on the root of your hard disk. However, if you have the Multiple User Accounts feature enabled, the location of the Documents folder may be similar to the following:

Macintosh HD:Users:username:Documents
