MXL5: "Not Enough Memory" Error Starting Excel on OS 9

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following error message

Not enough memory.
and Microsoft Excel does not start.

In addition, the error message may not display any buttons, but if you press RETURN, the error is dismissed.


CAUSE

This problem may occur if you are using Mac OS 9.


RESOLUTION

If Excel 5.0 was functioning properly under your previous Mac OS version, and you just upgraded to Mac OS 9, the only known method for resolving this problem may be as follows:

  1. Reinstall Mac OS 9 to a clean System Folder.


  2. Restart your computer using the new System Folder, and then reinstall Excel 5.0.

STATUS

This problem does not occur in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition running under Mac OS 9.0. It also does not occur if you are using Microsoft Excel 5.0 under Mac OS 8.6 or earlier.
