Excel: Cannot Size Objects in Dialog Editor

ID: Q32133

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 1.5, 2.2, 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

The Microsoft Excel Dialog Editor will not allow objects whose size has been set to Auto in the object information box to be resized by dragging the object's borders. To turn off Auto sizing, do the following:

  1. Open the object information box by either double-clicking the object or by clicking the object once and choosing Info from the Edit menu.

  2. Deselect Auto for Width and Height. The Dialog Editor will substitute the current measurements.

  3. Click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

If a dialog box description table has been copied from Excel and pasted into the Dialog Editor, any object whose Width and Height specifications (columns 4 and 5) are left blank will be brought into the editor with its size set to Auto.

An object whose Width is set to Auto can still be sized vertically as long as its Height is not set to Auto. Likewise, an object whose Height is set to Auto can be sized horizontally as long as its Width is not set to Auto.

Dialog boxes and group boxes can be sized on the screen even though their Height and Width are set to Auto. However, if Auto is specified in the information box for either of these, clicking OK to close the information box or copying the descriptor into Excel resizes the object according to the items that it contains.
