Excel: Column Width Increments Dependent on Font Size

ID: Q61497

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 2.2, 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, when column widths are changed, the increments that the columns move are dependent on the font and font size of the text.

If the standard font is used (Geneva 10 point), the column increments will be .14 (or occasionally .15). For example, the column may be set at 9.00 or 9.14 but not at any point in between. This setting will not allow you to set exact column widths of .5 point increments because a break would occur at the 9.57 mark in the previous example.

The following settings may also be useful:

Font Result
---- ------

Geneva 9 point Breaks at every .17 points (approximate)
Times 9 point Breaks at every .20 points (approximate)
Courier 9 point Breaks at every .20 points (approximate)
