No Warning for File Loading Failures

ID: Q63232

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2 versions 2.2, 2.21, 3.0

Microsoft Excel does not have the ability to verify the validity of a file before attempting to open the file. Because Excel cannot locate problems or corruption in a sheet before loading, it cannot display an alert warning of file problems or allow the cancellation of the File Open command.

As a result, it is possible for an Excel worksheet that has internal problems to cause Unrecoverable Application Errors (UAEs) or system failures.

This feature is under review and will be considered for inclusion in a future release.
