Excel: Number Format to Align Dollar ($) Signs

ID: Q66762

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2 versions 2.2, 2.21, and 3.0

SUMMARY

The following format will align the dollar signs ($) vertically:

   $* #,##0.00

By default, Microsoft Excel places the $ right next to the number. In the format above, the asterisk after $, followed by a blank space, tells Excel to fill the cell with spaces (where there are no numbers) and aligns a "$" farthest to the left.

For example:

       Without Format With Format
       -------------- -----------
