The following format will align the dollar signs ($) vertically:
By default, Microsoft Excel places the $ right next to the number. In the format above, the asterisk after $, followed by a blank space, tells Excel to fill the cell with spaces (where there are no numbers) and aligns a "$" farthest to the left. For example:
