Best Fit Does Not Dynamically Change Column Width

ID: Q68014

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0

SUMMARY

If you chose the AutoFit command (from the Format menu, choose Column, and then choose AutoFit) or the Best Fit command (Microsoft Excel 4.0 and earlier) to change the size of a column, and you then enter more information in a cell in that column so that the entry is longer than the new optimal column width, the column width is not changed to accommodate the new text.

To change the column width to fit the new text, choose AutoFit or Best Fit again or click the border of the column header.

MORE INFORMATION

When you choose AutoFit or Best Fit, Microsoft Excel determines the minimum width necessary to display the contents of the selected cells. When you click the column header border, Microsoft Excel determines the minimum width necessary to display the contents of the entire column.
