Long vs. Short Legend Symbols for Line or Scatter Charts

ID: Q69607

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0

SUMMARY

If a legend is added to a column, bar, area, or pie chart in Microsoft Excel, the symbols in the legend appear as solid square boxes. However, the symbols for a Line or Scatter chart are wider than they are high. If a chart includes an overlay or is a combination chart (of which one type is a line), all symbols default to wide symbols.

MORE INFORMATION

It is not possible to represent the different line patterns that are available for formatting line or scatter charts in Excel with a short symbol. Therefore, the symbols are made long enough so that you are able to distinguish between different line patterns that may occur on the chart. Any other solid symbols in the chart default to this long style so that all symbols in the legend are of uniform length.
