Excel: "Can't Access Document" Error Opening or Saving File

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you open or save a file, you may receive the error message "Can't Access Document."


CAUSE

This error message appears if Microsoft Excel is unable to access the file for any reason. For example, you receive this error message when you save a file to a floppy disk drive when the floppy disk is write-protected. In this case, you can remove the protection and save the file again.

If you receive this error message for any other reason, press the F1 key on your keyboard. Microsoft Excel will display reasons why this error message may have occurred. Or you can select Messages or Alert Messages from the Index portion of the Help menu to view this information.

Note that in Microsoft Excel version 7.0, if you save a file to a write protected floppy disk, you receive the following descriptive error message

Cannot save. The device is write protected.
