Value Axis Format Is Dependent on First Data Series Format

SUMMARY

The formatting of number labels on a chart's value axis is based on the column of data in the worksheet that contains the first data series in the chart. If the first column of data contains the first data series, the formatting applied to that column is the formatting used to format the value axis. In all other cases, the formatting applied to the second column is used.

Example

1. Create a worksheet with the following data:
   
   

   
         A1: 1   B1: 1   C1: 2
         A2: 2   B2: 1   C2: 3
         A3: 3   B3: 1   C3: 4
         A4: 4   B4: 1   C4: 5 




2. Format cells B1:B4 with $#,##0.00.



3. Select cells A1:C4 and press F11 to create a new chart. Choose OK in the dialog box that appears. (In Excel 2.x, no dialog appears.)
   
   The value axis will reflect the format of A1:A4.



4. Close the chart and create a new chart with the same data. However, this time choose First Column Contains X-Values for XY-Chart in the dialog that appears after pressing F11.
