Excel Err Msg: "Cannot Access CBT.XLW" when Running Tutorial
ID: Q72838
|
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
SUMMARY
If you attempt to run the Microsoft Excel Tutorial and Feature Guide
from a network, you may receive the error message "Cannot Access
CBT.XLW" if the network drive where Microsoft Excel is installed has
read-only privileges.
MORE INFORMATION
When you start the Microsoft Excel Tutorial and Feature Guide, it
attempts to create the workbook file CBT.XLW in the current directory,
(the CBT.XLW file will be a workspace file if you are using Microsoft
Excel version 3.0). If you don't have write privileges for the current
directory, you will receive the above error message.
Workarounds
To work around this problem, do one of the following:
- Change the current directory before you start the tutorial:
1. From the File menu, choose Open.
2. In the Directories box, select a directory for which you have
write privileges.
-or-
- Temporarily change the privileges to read, write, and create for
the Microsoft Excel drive or directory until everyone has completed
the Tutorial. (Note: Make a backup copy of the files because anyone
working on the server will be able to make changes to these files).
-or-
- Copy the complete Microsoft Excel directory to the hard drive of the
workstation where you want to use the Tutorial. After you have
finished the Tutorial, remove the directory from your hard drive.
In Microsoft Excel version 4.0a for Windows you can move the
tutorial files to a directory other than the Excel directory.
However, Microsoft Excel still needs to save the current workbook
settings, so you must ensure that you have write privileges to the
current directory before running the tutorial.
Note: In order to run the Microsoft Excel tutorial using version
4.0a, when the tutorial files have been moved to a different
directory, the line "CBTLOCATION=<path to tutorial directory>" must
be added to the [Microsoft Excel] section of the EXCEL4.INI file.
Also, "CBTLOCATION" must be entered in upper case.
Example:
CBTLOCATION=F:\TUTORIAL\EXCEL
Note: In order to run the Microsoft Excel tutorial using version
5.0, when the tutorial files have been moved to a different
directory, the line "CBTLOCATION=<path to tutorial directory>" must
be added to the [Microsoft Excel] section of the EXCEL5.INI file.
Also, "CBTLOCATION" must be entered in upper case.
Example:
CBTLOCATION=F:\TUTORIAL\EXCEL
