Excel: Size Limitation of Embedded Chart

ID: Q74302

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2 version 3.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

Charts embedded in a worksheet in Microsoft Excel have a size limitation. This limitation will vary depending on screen resolution. When the chart object is made larger than this maximum value, the chart will not expand to fill it. The chart prints as it appears on the screen.

Steps to Reproduce this Limitation

Note: This example assumes a VGA (480 x 640) resolution.

  1. Open a blank worksheet.

  2. Enter the numbers 1 through 30 in cells A1 through A30.

  3. Highlight A1:A30 and select the Embedded Chart tool.

  4. Draw the embedded chart box from B1 to AA50.

The chart itself will expand to approximately L42.

With a resolution of 800 x 600, the chart fills to P60 even though the chart box was drawn from B1 to AA50.
