Excel: Solver Command Does Not Appear in the Formula Menu

ID: Q78646

SUMMARY

If Solver is not properly installed or the Excel Settings file is deleted or moved from the System Folder after Solver is installed, the Solver command does not appear in the Formula menu.

To display Solver on the Formula menu, use the following steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Excel Setup disk.

  2. If using Excel version 3.0, double-click the Excel setup application icon.

If using Excel version 4.0, click the Custom button for the Microsoft
       Excel Installation Types.

  3. Select Solver from the list of installation options, clear the other options, and continue installation.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Solver, the Setup program writes information to the Excel Settings file that instructs Excel to insert the Solver command into the Formula menu. If Excel does not find an Excel Settings file in the System Folder when you launch the program, Excel creates a new Excel Settings file that does not contain information about Solver.

Another way to add Solver to the Formula menu is to move SOLVER Add-in from the Solver folder into the root level of the Excel Startup folder. The disadvantage of this method is that Excel loads the SOLVER Add-in each time you launch Excel so that the time required for the launch process increases.

You can add the Solver command for a single Excel session without installing it again. To enable the Solver command for one session only, just open SOLVER Add-in from the Solver folder in the Excel Startup folder.
