Excel: Text Pasted from Word for Windows Gets Truncated

SYMPTOMS

When a long string of text is copied from Word for Windows and pasted into a single cell in Microsoft Excel for Windows, the text is truncated and pasted into the row(s) below. The problem occurs when Word for Windows pastes the text into the Clipboard. The Clipboard wraps the text, and when Microsoft Excel pastes the information into a cell, it is truncated.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open Microsoft Word for Windows and Microsoft Excel.


  2. Activate Word for Windows and create a document 12-inches wide. You can do this by choosing Paragraph from the Format menu and entering

    -6"

    in the Indentation From Right text box.


  3. Type a string of text the width of the page.


  4. Select the entered text and choose Copy from the Edit menu.


  5. Minimize Word for Windows and activate Microsoft Excel.


  6. Select cell A1 and choose Paste from the Edit menu.


The text will be truncated and the remaining portion(s) will be pasted into A2, A3, and so on, as if carriage returns had been inserted throughout the string of text.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows version 3.0, and 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
