Excel: Charting Nonadjacent Selections Return Hidden Series

SUMMARY

In version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, the Preferred Chart Tool does not work properly with nonadjacent selections. Use of this tool on nonadjacent ranges to create a chart results in 'invisible' series or many extra series referring to ranges that were not selected.

The problem also occurs when using the CREATE.OBJECT command in a macro and when using any of the Chart tools on the Charting toolbar.

Workaround

To chart data within nonadjacent cells, you may use Microsoft Excel's other methods for creating charts, including highlighting the data and making a new chart and then copying the chart to the worksheet. The data also may be charted as graphic objects using the Chart Wizard or by doing the following:

  1. Click a blank cell.


  2. From the Chart toolbar (or the Microsoft Excel 3.0 toolbar), select the Preferred Chart tool and draw a graphic rectangle. This produces a blank object.


  3. Highlight the data to be charted, using the COMMAND key.


  4. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.


  5. Double-click the blank chart object.


  6. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.


To workaround the problem of using CREATE.OBJECT in a macro, use the CHART.WIZARD macro command. For more information on the CHART.WIZARD command, consult pages 49-50 in the "Microsoft Excel Function Reference."
