Virus Protection Causes Problems with Excel 4.x Setup

ID: Q87996

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

The setup program for version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel may fail if you have a virus protection utility running when installing Microsoft Excel. Disable any virus protection utilities before running the Microsoft Excel setup program.

When you attempt to run Microsoft Excel after installing it through Microsoft Office 3.0 integrated setup, you may receive the following error messages at the point noted in square brackets:

"Application Execution Error: Access to the specified device, path, file is denied." [from the icon]

"Cannot access this file. Please verify security privileges on the network drive." [from File Manager]
For information on disabling your virus protection utility, refer to the documentation that accompanied it.

NOTE: This problem does not occur in later versions of Microsoft Excel for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

Some common errors that result from running the Microsoft Excel setup program along with a virus protection utility include:

  • Setup fails, and Microsoft Excel displays the error message:
Not enough memory or insufficient disk space

  • Improper installation of the Microsoft Excel program file (EXCEL.EXE). Typically, the Microsoft Excel program icon is not created in Windows Program Manager, and attempting to run the Microsoft Excel program from Windows File Manager results in the error:
    Unexpected DOS error 5

The errors noted after installing from the Microsoft Office integrated setup do not occur if virus checking TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs are disabled.
