Excel: Links Change After Specifying Alternate Startup Folder

SUMMARY

Linked spreadsheets that are opened and saved after specifying an Alternate Startup Folder may contain incorrect path information to precedent documents on subsequently reopening the documents. The erroneous link contains path information to the original Microsoft Excel Startup Folder (4).

In this case, the only workaround is to remove the Alternate Startup Folder information and reestablish links for any files which had previously been saved.

Workaround

The following workarounds describe removing the Alternate Startup Folder and reestablishing links to an external document.

To Remove an Existing Alternate Startup Folder

  1. From the File menu, choose Open.


  2. Open the Alternate Startup Folder add-in located in the Macro Library folder.


  3. Press the DELETE key to clear the existing path information for an Alternate Startup Folder and choose the OK button.


  4. When queried to 'Remove current alternate startup folder?' choose the OK button once more.


To Reestablish Links to an External Document

  1. From the File menu, choose Links.


  2. Select the appropriate link and click the Change button.


  3. Navigate to the appropriate folder location and double-click the precedent file.
